I will briefly share, from my perspective and to the best of my recollection, the HO Racing in Denver since 1987.  Some details may not be accurate, but they are as accurate as I can recall, and I apologize to those who I may have left out or if remember incorrectly.


I was eight or nine years old when I got an HO Slot car set for Christmas -- the Aurora Golden Gate Bridge set.  My sister and I would race for hours.  So many hours, in fact, that the push button controllers would get so hot that they stopped working.  It was frustrating at times, messing with the track that moved on the carpet and inadvertently stopped working on the back straight away.  For the most part, it was good times for me and my fellow racers (primarily my sister).

When my son Dan was seven years old, I was looking for a present for Christmas.  I saw slot car sets by Tyco in a catalog.  Being a little on the frugal side, I called my mother to see if see still had my old set -- luckily she did.  I bought a couple of new cars to go with the old track.  Christmas morning, we set up a large layout in the basement on the carpet, just like old times.  It is always lots of fun when your kids reach an age where you want to play with their toys!

It wasn't long before we graduated from the floor to a few card tables and boards.  The new cars were great, but I wanted the old cars to run as well.  I went searching for parts in hopes of reconditioning the old cars.  My only previous knowledge of HO merchandise was a toy section in an old Ben Franklin store in Sterling, CO, forty-five miles from where I lived.  Now that I was in the Denver area, I was disappointed to discover that no one seemed to have parts for the old cars. (I did discover hobby stores - yes, a sheltered childhood)

Someone suggested that I go to a hobby store to find parts for my old cars.  Finally, I was directed to a place called Judson’s on South Federal in Denver.  Wow!  Judson's had all kinds of parts, they even had parts for the old T-Jet style cars I had.  I hadn't realized that my old cars were valuable as collectibles.  I would have gladly sold the lot to Jud Judson for less than $5.  Thank God for Jud's honesty.  He told me they were valuable as collectibles and suggested that I hang on to them.  I ended buying about $12.00 worth of parts to fix up two of the old T-Jet cars.  Money was very tight and I was resigned to preserving the old cars and not racing them.

In Judson’s hobby store was a little, yellow, curled up 3x5 card that said, "HO Racing, Call Mike ------." I took the number and gave Mike a call. He invited me to Dan Briewick's apartment for Monday night racing. Mike told me of a car that would clock a two and a half second laps on a 70 foot track -- this I had to see!

 I sold six T-Jet cars on consignment at Judson's to fund my venture into HO racing.

We raced every Monday night at Dan Brewick's apartment.  This informal group of racers was headed up by Briewick, Mike Stewart and Cal Jaros with assistance from Tim Essman.  We raced HOPRA Box Stock, Super Stock and Modified classes with minor modifications.

Several events transpired early in 1988...
-- Briewick moved to Minnesota, and took his track with him!
-- Dennis Schoenberg and Tim Essman constructed a 4x23 foot Tyco speedway and set it up for racing in Dennis' garage.
-- There wasn't a lot of extra space, but it didn't seem to limit the amount of fun we had that summer.  Tim Warner constructed a 4x16 foot Tyco track with a layout similar to that of the current Buck Track. 


Warner's track, set up for racing in his garage, became a steady venue for racing over the next two years.  I suppose most of the HO racing enthusiasts in the Denver area raced in Warner's garage at one time or another during that two years.  We raced HOPRA: Box Stock, Super Stock and Modified.

A group of racers from Colorado Springs, Colorado joined us in the racing.  We set up a series of races and alternated between Colorado Springs and Denver.
    
By mid year, the heart of the group was held together by Tim Warner, Scott Johnson, Mike Stewart and Tim Essman.

"The “World of Wheels” car show is a full scale car show that used to be held in Denver on an annual basis.  To help promote HO scale racing activities we got a booth at the show.  This was a major race during Thanksgiving weekend. We continued this activity for the next 3 years. (1989-1992)

Doug Jordan opened up a commercial raceway in combination with a pool hall in downtown Commerce City Colorado.  Tim Warner made his track available to the raceway and racing continued on a weekly basis.
    
The sequence of events at this point in time are a little fuzzy for me, with people building and selling tracks. Denver was "booming" with HO racers who were moving around to different sites to enjoy the tracks that people had built to race on.


Jordan bought Tim Warner’s track, built another track and moved to an industrial park in North Denver.

Steve Deanda was one of the key HO enthusiasts who emerged during this time. He purchased a track (or two) built by Max Tracy and put them in his basement.  At this time, the group had three venues to race at.  A few months later Deanda bought Dennis Schoenberger’s 4x23 foot Tyco track.  At that point he had three tracks, two in the basement and the 4x23 foot track in the middle of the dinning/living room -- what an advocate of HO racing!


On March 10th, 2000, Steve Deanda passed away.





In 1990, I finished my 4x16 foot T-Jet track with continuous
rail.  Although not named the Green Hornet at the time, I moved this track to Jordan's for a couple of races. With the completion of the Green Hornet, the number of tracks the group was racing on had grown to six! The Colorado Spring contingent group, headed by Chuck Granger and Sam Beckworth, had two different tracks.

Most of the people who knew Jordan and visited his race shop remember his final location on 84th Avenue in Thornton, a suburb of Denver.  Doug was at this location until he closed just after the hosting of the 94 UFORA Nationals.  One MHOSA associate remembers the wide 8-lane "tub track" with a large radius high banked curve that Jordan had at this location.  The track was acquired from Celebrity Sports Center on South Colorado Blvd.  Being a former full scale drag racer, Jordan also hosted HO scale drag races in the Thornton location.

Colorado racers (CHOPA) hosted the 1991 HOPRA National competition. The effort was lead by Mike Stewart and official HOPRA advocates with a lot of assistance from Doc Jones of Denver.  It was not the best of times for unity in the National HO Racing community.  Chuck Granger brought a track from Colorado Springs to support the Super Stock class.  Dennis Schoenberger’s 4x23 foot track was used for the Modified class.  Local racer Tim Essman won the Modified National Champion on this track!  The Python track was imported from Minnesota to support the Open class.  A track co-owned by Mike Stewart and Tim Essman had just been built and was used to support the Restricted Open class.  During the same year, Mark MacVitte hosted the 91 UFORA National Competition in Phoenix, Arizona.

Jordan was quite successful at bringing in different tracks and building or helping build tracks to race on.  By this time, the Raceway had six tracks:
- 6-lane 10-foot U-turn oval 
- 30-foot drag strip 
- short track (5x10), great for Box Stock class 
- 4x16 foot Tomy track build by Mike Reasons (purchased by the Bowden Brothers)
 - a wide 8-lane production routed track called "The Engleman" pictured at left.
Special Note: The Engleman track was acquired from the Celebrity Sports Center where it was used for pay/hour HO Racing in the 60’s. The rails were turned over HO railroad track, if I recall correctly.

Fred and Laura's track comes on line.  Many good times were said to have been had in that garage for Friday night races.

Doug Jordan and local racers hosted the 1994 UFORA nationals at the Hacienda Hotel in Thornton Colorado.  Among the racer hosts were: Dennis Freiberg, Scott Johnson, Mike Reasons, Chris Beyers, Tim Warner, Rick Nazarenus, Dennis Schoenberger, Tim Essman, Tim Riensch.  Scott Johnson’s Green Hornet track was used to support the Restricted Open and Open class races.  Tim Warner’s track was used to support the amateur Box Stock race.  Fred & Laura’s track was used to support the Super Stock class.  Mike Reasons' track (now Bowden Brothers’ Raceway) supported the Modified class.  Bob Lincoln, of Wizzard, furnished a lap counting computer system for the Modified race.  Brian Lowe supplied a Lane Master timing system for the Restricted Open and Open class races.  Doc Jones’ lap counter software was used for the Super Stock and amateur Box Stock races.

Scott Maceachen opened a Hot Wheels and car collector store on South Broadway in Denver.  He had a basic track in his place but was not racing on it.  After Jordan closed, Mike Reasons moved his track to Maceachen's place and Friday night racing resumed.  Maceachen's place closed in March of 1996 but re-opened in September 1996.

During this time 'Shep' Shepler rented the Green Hornet and put in his 1/24th scale Acolade Raceway on South Broadway.  The group raced at both raceways with Super Stock on Fridays at Maceachen's and RO races rotated between the two raceways.

1997 Spring Maceachen's closed. 
1997 May Acolade closed. Racing on a weekly basis stopped.

The Bowden Brothers (Butch, Randy and Rod) purchased Tim Warner's track after the 1994 Nationals.  Randy put the track into his garage in Longmont, Colorado, but no formal races were hosted there.  Later, the Bowden’s purchased Reasons' track after Maceachen closed in 1997.  Rod Bowden’s set up the track in his house in Aurora, Colorado.  The group started rotating RO races again in the Winter of 1997 rotating once a month between Fastlane Raceway in Downtown Arvada (Mike Stewart and Tim Essman track was located there), Scott Johnson’s in Littleton, and the Bowdens' in Aurora.

The Bowden Brothers' track went into storage when Rod moved so the group scheduled a Restricted Open class season around two tracks: Scott Johnson's at his new house in Highlands Ranch and Fastlane in Arvada.

In the interest of attracting new racers, the group supported Scott Johnson's idea of introducing a new "stock class" of racing; the Patriot II.  Fastlane raceway in Arvada hosts semi weekly racing and carries cars and accessories to support the class on an ongoing basis.

Phillip Hilgert has taken delivery of a 6-lane Scorpion Buck Scorpion Track and is expected to be open in early 2000 at Summit Motor Speedway in Silverthorn, Colorado.

Johnny Barvick has also acquired a Buck Scorpion Track in this time frame.

August 26th, 1999 -- Butch Bowden wins the first MHOSA sanctioned Patriot II series.  Scott Johnson wins the first MHOSA sanctioned RO series Summer series (two races).

December 5, 1999 -- Dan Pierce's Bengal Raceway opened to host the fourth of eight RO season races.

December 1999 -- Fastlane Raceway closed.  Mike Thurman (Mike's Collectables) acquired the track.

January 13, 2000 -- MHOSA introduced two Super G+ classes (Box Stock and Super Stock to be run on the stock Patriot II schedule.

April 20, 1999 -- Scott Johnson wins the first "full length" RO series (Winter 1999/2000).  Butch Bowden wins corresponding Patriot II series.

April 1999 -- Four MHOSA members (Butch Bowden, Dan Pierce, Phillip Hilgert and Roger Thompson) travel to Kansas City to race with Mokan and Pro-cam
clubs.

April 27, 2000 -- MHOSA goes to a four season per year 
format.  Summer 2000 Season begins.  First MHOSA Apprentice Program begins.

June 29, 2000 -- Bowden Brothers' Speedrome comes online at Roger Thompson's Tuscany Raceway Park in
Aurora.

August 14, 2000 -- Danny Johnson wins the Summer 2000 RO series.  Phillip Hilgert is second, Dan Pierce is third.

August 24, 2000 -- The first MHOSA sanctioned "Open Chassis" Super Stock race is held on the newly extended "Legacy 20" Speedway.  OCSS becomes a regular part of the Stock Night agenda in the Fall 2000 season.  First Apprentice Program ends; results.

September 2000 -- Dan Pierce opens the "club parts box"

September 28, 2000 -- the MHOSA web site gets it's 5000th visitor.

October 20-21, 2000 -- MHOSA hosts the first "Interstate HO Challenge."  Clubs from Kansas, Missouri, and Washington attend.

Summer 2001 -- Six MHOSA members (Walt Pierce,
Butch Bowden, Chris Beyers, Phil Hilgert, and Roger Thompson) attend the UFHORA National championships.  Thompson places sixth in RO.

Fall 2001 -- Four MHOSA members (Butch Bowden, Dave Goens, Phil Hilgert, and Roger Thompson) attend the Western States Championships).  Hilgert qualified third in Super Stock, Roger Thompson and Butch Bowden placed 7th and 8th respectively in Super Stock.

Fall 2001 -- Adventure Raceway's Buck Scorpion is sanctioned by MHOSA.

Winter 2002 -- Summit Raceway's Buck Scorpion is sanctioned by MHOSA.

Summer 2002 -- Six members of MHOSA (Geoff Campbell, Chris Beyers, Butch Bowden, Roger Thompson, and Robby Thompson) attend the HOPRA Nationals in Milwaukee, WI.

Summer 2002 -- Legacy Too MaxTrax is sanctioned by MHOSA.

Winter 2003 -- Scott Johnson's Brad Bowman custom track named Passkey is sanctioned by MHOSA.

Fall 2003 -- Broomfield Raceway (Chris Beyers) and Radon Seal Raceway (Brett Ginsburg), both MaxTrax, are sanctioned by MHOSA.

Spring 2004 -- Bengal Raceway (Dan Pierce owner) closed due to move to new house in Parker

Spring 2005 -- Carter International Raceway (owner and builder Jim Carter) is sanctioned by MHOSA to host races starting in summer 2005

Fall 2004 -- MHOSA introduces the "Match League,," a ladder ranking system to encourage parity and excitement in racing.

Fall 2005 -- MHOSA introduces the "Stock Slip-on Class" aimed at low cost entry for beginners.

Summer 2006 -- Rick White purchases from Phillip Hilgert, 6 Lane Scorpion Bros Fast Raceway (Rick White owner) is sanctioned for MHOSA racing.  While Rick hosted for only two seasons prior to his move out of state, he was honored by MHOSA with a special award for being the best recruiter of new racers.  Rick has been missed.

Summer 2007 – MHOSA responds to an invitation and sends a team to participate in the 24 hours at Les Boise endurance race in Boise, Idaho.

Fall 2007 – MHOSA DVD Challenge for beginners based on Slip-on Class.

Spring 2007 -- Brett Ginsburg buys 6 lane Buck Scorpion from Rick White, Bros Fast raceway.

Fall 2007 -- Brett’s Radon Raceway is sanctioned for Fall 2007 MHOSA racing.

Fall 2009 -- MHOSA hosts its first 12 hour Enduro at Radon Seal Raceway.

July 2011 -- MHOSA hosts 2nd Enduro - only 8 hours for this one hosted by Chris Beyers.

Winter 2011 – Jerry Readle becomes new sanctioned Host for MHOSA with his Scott Dunlap custom-routed raceway in Westminster.

December 2011 -- MHOSA host 3rd Enduro, 8 hours hosted by Scott Johnson.

Summer 2012 – Bengal Race track (owner Dan Pierce) is sold to relative of Brett Ginsburg’s in Utah and Dan purchases the Green Hornet.

Fall 2012 -- Ronald Lowrance MaxTrack host first sanctioned MHOSA race October 2012

Fall 2012 -- Dan Pierce does a major rework of his purchased track and Dan’s raceway, The Hornet Nest is sanctioned to host MHOSA races (November 2012).

Winter 2013 -- April -Another great season of close racing fun!  Season Points Champions awarded.

Summer 2013 -- summer racing continues running, most with X-Jets.

August 2013 -- Input from racers impact changes to driver classes:
New naming convention for driver classes:
Restricted Amateur- this is an entry level driver class running an X-Jet car with restrictions, Restricted Pro – this is a more experienced driver class running a restricted X-Jet car, Open Pro – this is a more experienced driver class running an open X-Jet car.

October 2013 – We lost one of our long time racers to cancer, Dan Johnson, age 34.  We will miss you Dan, you were a ferocious competitor and great sportsman.

November 2013 -- Ronald Lowrance announces his move away from Denver.  Ronald will be missed as well as his fast and open layout MaxTrax will be a loss from the venues we enjoy at MHOSA.

November 2013 -- Steve Butcher's new 4-lane MaxTrax (Ray Ray Raceway) hosted its first race on December 20 for the Front Range HO group which races legacy HO cars.

August 2013 -- Tom Wuertz purchased John Barvik’s six lane Buck Scorpion track and Tom’s Englewood Speedway was sanctioned for MHOSA racing during the fall season.

December 2013 -- Fall Season Points Championship Awards

December 2013 -- currently racing three driver classes: Restricted Amateur, Restricted Pro, Open Pro, X-Jet cars.  Special award for Best Sport was voted on and given to Dan Johnson, fellow race who passed during the fall season.

December 2013 – Radon Raceway owner Brett Ginsburg announces temporary closure of raceway due to a new house purchase in Aurora.  Brett hopes to move and have new raceway ready to host by March of 2014.

Winter 2014 -- Mike Stewart scores a double win in the points championship for the fourth time (X-Jet Open Pro and X-Jet Restricted Pro).  Well-earned and well deserved Mike.

Fall 2014 -- Action Speedway owner David Tompkins hosted his first MHOSA race on a new MaxTrax (Action Speedway).  Beautifully constructed track with an open, fast layout.

Fall 2014 -- Radon Seal Raceway is now active again and hosting races (fall 2014).  Thanks Brett for continuing to host and also the walkout basement is a nice feature of  the new house and for the racing venue.

Fall 2014 – Screaming Eagle Raceway, built by Bill Elliot, hosted its first and second sanctioned MHOSA race during the fall season of 2014. This is a Dan Cronin track with a couple of particularly challenging corners (the paper clip)and esses.

Winter 2015 -- Another successful season of X-Jet racing.  MHOSA members continue to find ways to make these cars, without traction magnets and at 12 volts, go faster and faster.

Winter 2015 -- A core group of racers (lead by Mike Stewart) start running HOPRA-legal magnet cars in preparation for attending the NATIONALS hosted by Lucky Bob's in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

June 2015 -- Colorado attendee's at the HOPRA NATIONAL were Don Reimer, Alex Townsend, Tom Wuertz, Bill Elliott, Chris Beyers and Mike Stewart.  Mike was voted in as a Colorado HOPRA representative (CHOPRA).  The team faired well considering these five were first time attendees.  All enjoyed themselves and were supported by a host of key people from Colorado, Arizona (Mike Stewart’s dad and Mark McVitte), and elsewhere (Thanks Rick Derosa for your help).

Summer 2015 -- MHOSA group continues to race a lot of different kinds of cars for a change up during the summer.  Lots of IROC races of different vintages of cars from T-Jets, Tyco 440-X2, Semi-Trucks and trailers etc.


Fall 2015 -- MHOSA group decides to change the open class rules to allow Level 10 magnets to be used in the open class X-Jet Car.  The larger BSRT magnets are allowed with the hope that will add more handling to the open car and a bigger separation of lap totals of 6 ohm and open classes of cars.  Effective date for new magnets is for Winter Season 2016.

Fall 2015 -- Run time change for race format is changed mid-season.  With most racer running the two classes, 6 ohm and Open Classes, the time to run a race was extended to 4 hours.  This made for an evening extension of race time past the weeknight feasibility.  MHOSA still allows racers to run both classes on the first race and then only one class on the second race of the evening.


Winter 2016 -- John Baylor adds a track to the MHOSA sanctioned tracks.  This was Ronald Lowrance's MaxTrax track with some additional track added to make it a longer track.  It also has the ability to convert to a Tri-Oval.  Track is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Winter 2016 -- Another successful season of X-Jet Racing.  They level 10 magnets in the open class have proved to be a lot of fun and made for new challenges for car set up and finding a new dimension of speed and handling.

Spring 2016 -- Front Range is represented at the Fray race in California.  A team of six went to the Fray: John Baylor, Barry Jencson, Tom Wuertz, Geoff Campbell, Serge Arrestouilh and Walt Pierce.

Summer 2016 -- Colorado group (CHOPRA) goes to the HOPRA Nationals in the Boston area.  Congratulation to all who participated, Mike Stewart, John Baylor, Alex Townsend, Bill Elliot, Wilbert Williams.   Colorado was represented well with Alex Townsend finishing 4th and Mike Stewart finishing 1st in the Amateur Super Stock.   The competition was keen as our Colorado racers pitted their skills against the best in the nation.

Summer 2016 -- New Tracks
Two tracks were add to the arsenal of continuous rail, commercial quality tracks. 

Grizzly Raceway -- Track Owner Barry Jencson in Colorado Springs.  This MaxTrax is a 5 x 16 foot road course that offers lots of turns with elevations changes, one 16-foot straightaway and one overpass.


Fall 2016 -- MHOSA X-Jet Point Championship Race Series – MHOSA completes another race season of the X-Jet cars. The cars have grown to now include a C-4 motor magnet (no traction magnets), stronger than stock for the 6 ohm class and the racers suggested level 10 motor magnets for the Open Class. The level 10 magnets have proved to be a real game changer for the open class. Most racers ran two classes and because of run time rules, the racing has gained a new life for the X-Jet cars and point championship series.


Summer 2017 -- The Denver area continues to be blessed with an abundance of tracks and race programs. Front Range continues with Vintage Slot car racing on Friday nights as well as the Colorado HOPRA race group honing their skills to prepare for the HOPRA Nationals in June of 2017. CHOPRA has it's first National Champion, Mike Stewart Jr placed first in the HOPRA NEO MOD. Many other Colorado racers placed well and represented Colorado well, Congrats to all (Don Reimer, Tom Wuertz, Chris Beyers, Alex Townsend, Bill Elliot, Wilber Williams). Go to HOPRA.net for more results. Roval Dome is sold or moved with Jerry out of the Colorado area. We will miss Jerry. Action Speedway David Thompkins – sold track to John Baylor. John has plans to set up a second track at some point.


Fall 2017 -- MHOSA continues with the X-Jet Series and adds a new racer class. This is a 3-ohm car with spec rear tires and level 10 motor magnets. While not well attended for the Fall, it does promise to be a good car choice for the entry level racer.


Winter 2018 -- Phil Malone add a Max Track to the mix, located in Parker, CO. Phil is racing Front Range group only races at this time.

Winter 2018 -- John Baylor also bought Dennis Schoenberg's MaxTrax.  More details to follow. 

​April 2018 -- MHOSA Winter Points Championship- MHOSA finished up the winter season with three classes of cars and a ton of fun!  Congrat's to all.

May 2018 -- MHOSA Enduro: This is the fourth Enduro MHOSA has hosted over the past years.  Teams have been formed and we will be racing the 3 ohm class car for this race.  More information to follow.
